HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance) filters are used in hospitals and labs because they are considered the best filters on the market today. HEPA filters were originally developed by the Atomic Energy Commission during World War II to remove radioactive dust, which was invisible and hazardous to health. A filter must collect 99.97% of particles at .3 microns in size, in a test established by the Institute of Environmental Sciences, in order to receive the HEPA filter designation. However, HEPA filters can also capture particulate down to 0.01 microns in size.
Universal use of HEPA filtration has been a challenge because of the high system pressure needed to force air through the dense HEPA filter media. Typical heating and cooling systems lack the fan horsepower required to push air through HEPA filters, although excellent results can be achieved by installing the Bypass HEPA in a bypass mode onto your HVAC system. The Bypass HEPA overcomes this air flow obstacle with a quiet, powerful 300 CFM fan motor mounted between a carbon pre-filter and the HEPA filter. By accurately moving the air through a HEPA filter with this fan motor we take a large portion of the air out of the return and run it through the hospital-grade HEPA filter and then return the purified air back into the system air flow. Polluted air is pulled through the carbon pre-filter, removing gas-phase contaminants and odors, and then pushed through the HEPA filter which removes ultrafine particles. These components are designed to maintain performance characteristics for two years before replacement is necessary.
